15 self-portraits for self-confidence
This school year 2021/2022 the students of the IB programme of Matija Gubec International School Zagreb have participated in an eTwinning project '15 self-portraits for self-confidence'.
The project is primarily intended for MYP1 grade students. However, students from other MYP grade levels could also have participated in the project. The project was created in collaboration with my colleague Petra Ružić, an Art teacher from August Šenoa Primary School in Zagreb, who is a co-author of the project together with me. 15 portraits were created during 18 Visual Art lessons. The students have had the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of the authors of academic Realism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and Street Art. The students have learned about outlines and structural lines, drawing and painting textures, collage techniques and photographic editing, positive and negative space, caricature, profile, enface, etc. One of the assessment criteria is the visual art skill that the students should have applied in their self-portraits in various drawings and combined techniques, using the previously listed key concepts while solving certain art problems. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop students' self-confidence and confidence in personal abilities and identity, which is one of the goals of the cross-curricular topic 'Personal and Social Development' (within the National Curriculum Framework of the Ministry of Science and Education of Croatia).
The project has resulted in interesting artworks, some of which you can see in the photo gallery below.
