Invoking Spring in PYP4
Carnival is the time of year when people disguise before 40 days of Lent, before Easter. The world's famous carnival celebrations are held in Rio de Janeiro and Venice. In Croatia Carnival or as we call it Poklade, Fašnik, Maškare, is very popular and widely celebrated. During these days we celebrate the end of Winter and invoke Spring. Bellmen especially help us to do that.
Bellmen (better known as Zvončari) is the characteristic folk custom maintained in the region around Rijeka, Croatia. It was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The primary task of Zvončari is to scare away evil spirits of winter and to stir up the new spring-time cycle.
As the carnival comes to a close PYP4 students had a special task where they made their own Bellmen masks. The task was proved to be a lot of fun for the students as they got to make their masks and wear them on their heads. Hopefully, they managed to invite Spring!
