Meeting the author and illustrator

Meeting the author and illustrator

This Friday, October 21, children's writer Nina Vadžić and illustrator Ana Kadoić visited our school. In addition to teaching us how picture books are made, they read one of their books to us.

At the end of the meeting, our PYP4 students Luka, Lea and Viktoria, members of the Journalism Group, asked the writers several questions. Although the interview was held in Croatian, here you can read the translated, English version.

How are you?
I'm very well! How are you?

Good! How long have you been writing picture books?
My first picture book came out 8 years ago. So I've been publishing picture books for 8 years, but I've been writing for a very long time. I've been writing lyrics since elementary school. I really like to write, but I started publishing books when I gave birth to my first child.

Do you also write and illustrate picture books?
No. I just write, and the illustrators illustrate. I draw very badly! If I illustrated my books, no one would read them.

How many picture books have you written so far?
I think I have published 11 picture books so far. Two of my picture books became cartoons that you can find on the YouTube channel.

Is there anything else that inspires you besides your children?
You children are my greatest source of inspiration. You encourage our creativity and imagination.

Do you sometimes lack inspiration? If the answer is yes, what do you do then?
It happens. I've learned over the years that an idea comes to mind first, but I've realized that I don't need to start writing right away. I let the idea brew, sometimes it takes 3 weeks. Only then do I sit down at the laptop and write what I came up with.

How old were you when you wrote your first picture book?
I wrote my first picture book at the age of 33.

What is your favorite book?
My favorite book that I have written is Ti nisi kao mi. I think every child should read it, but also all adults.

Do you have a new book in preparation?
I have. I'm still thinking about what the book will be called. I know one will be called Balloon Girl and it will be for slightly older children. The book A Special Gift, which I personally like very much, will be published next year.

Thank you very much!
Thank you! You came up with great questions!
