International Mother Language Day 2023

International Mother Language Day 2023

We have explored the diverse languages our students speak in our classrooms and found out that 30 languages are spoken at MG: Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Croatian, English, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Kannada, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swedish, Tajik, Tigrinya, Turkish, Ukrainian and Xhosa.

On February 16th we marked the International Mother Language Day at our school. This day is important as it is a time to reflect on why we need to respect our language and the languages of those around us. On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day a series of the Student-Led Mother Language Courses were held, where the MYP students in question taught their PYP and MYP colleagues and teachers the basics of Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hungarian, Kannada, Macedonian, Polish, Serbian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

In Visual Art class the MYP students made the Valentine's heart boxes and wrote the notes of love and gratitude in their mother tongue to the persons they held dear to their heart.

We would like to give our special thanks to the students who taught us the basics of their mother language - Ariola, Aron, Diar, Luna, Nicat, Federica, Hanfei, Mira, Mayon, Mihaela, Szymon, Mihajlo, Karla, Edgar, Viktoria and Dominik.

Both their fellow classmates and teachers enthusiastically engaged in learning the basic words and phrases in diverse mother languages and discovering interesting facts about their countries and cultures. Our students definitely appreciate having friends from all language backgrounds.
