European Day of Languages

European Day of Languages

In the week from the 23rd to 27th of September the PYP and MYP students have marked the European Day of Languages in our school. The goal of the European Day of Languages is to promote linguistic diversity and ability to speak other languages. The European Day of Languages is celebrated annually on the 26th of September, for the first time in 2001 initiated by the European Commission and Council of Europe.

Most students in our school are native speakers of Croatian or English, but there are many other languages spoken here, since our students come from all around the world. The languages taught in our school are German, French and Italian. These languages are really popular in Croatia because these countries have had a significant historical, cultural, and economic influence on Croatia.

But do you know what are the most spoken languages in Europe? Since we believe all our students show curiosity, we explored this topic a little bit further. We explored the educational posters made by the Italian, German and French teachers and students and we interviewed our Italian teacher, Ms. Jelena.

  • The most spoken languages in the world are English and Mandarin Chinese, while in Europe the most spoken are Russian, German, French, English, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Polish and Romanian.
  • Most of the languages in Europe belong to three language families: Germanic, Slavic or Romance.

We should cherish the language diversity in our school and respect our language teachers, as they role-model us as their language teachers used to role-model them. They inspire us to keep learning new languages which is essential in the education of every student.
