Coronavirus prevention

Dear Students and Parents,

As concerns over the coronavirus rise we want to outline our approach to ensuring the safest possible environment for our students.

Here are some basic facts you need to know about the virus. Our guidance will always follow the recommendations and requirements of all relevant government bodies and health authorities. There are recognized sites to refer to for the facts, patterns and developments with respect to the virus:

Croatian Ministry of Health

Croatian Institute for Public Health

The World Health Organisation (WHO)

European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC)

Measures on Prevention of Coronavirus in School:

Good personal hygiene including proper hand hygiene is an effective way to prevent infection. In view of the reported cases of coronavirus in Croatia and uncertainty on its transmissibility, the following actions are taken in school to prevent coronavirus infection:

Maintain good indoor ventilation:

  • opening the classroom windows for better ventilation

Environmental cleansing and disinfection:

  • keeping classrooms, kitchen, lockers, cafeteria and toilets clean and hygienic
  • maintaining good hygienic standard of the school premises through thorough cleansing and disinfection daily
  • cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, furniture, commonly shared items and floor at least daily by using appropriate disinfectant

Environmental support for hand hygiene practice:

  • providing liquid soap and disposable paper towels or hand dryers at places where there are handwashing facilities, e.g. toilets, kitchens

School meals:

  • nutrition with health-boosting vitamins and nutrients

Maintaining respiratory hygiene practices in accordance to the following advice:

  • wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or use a 70-80% alcohol-based hand sanitizer
    • especially before eating, after sneezing and coughing and after touching germ hotspots  (such as keyboards, doorknobs...)
    • scrub all over including the back of your hands, between fingers, and around nails, for about 45 seconds, about the time it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice
    • then rinse well in warm water, dry with a paper towel, and use the towel to turn off the water
    • if soap and water are not available use a hand sanitizer
  • maintain at least 1 meter distance from yourself and anyone who is coughing and sneezing
  • carry tissues and hand sanitizers
  • cover your nose and mouth with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze:
    • sneeze into a tissue and throw it in the trash right after, then wash your hands
    • otherwise, cough or sneeze into crook of your elbow, not your hands
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth unless you have just washed your hands
  • stay home if you feel unwell
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • spend big break in the fresh air in the school playground under the teachers’ supervision
  • keep backpacks and lockers clean
  • avoid sharing at school, especially food, drinks, pencils, sharpeners, lipsticks...
  • build your immunity: get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of water, and eat nutritious food.

As this is also flu season, we continue to remind students to follow preventive actions that can help fight the flu:
