The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Homeland War and the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja

On the occasion of commemorating the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja and the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Homeland War, which this year, November 18, is celebrated for the first time as a non-working day and a national holiday, we were reminded of the tragic events in our homeland 29 years ago.

The students got acquainted with the suffering of Croatian soldiers, civilians and children in those difficult days through symbols that remind us of the struggle for Croatian freedom and independence: Vukovar water tower, a blue coat worn by girl Zeljka Juric coming out in a column from ruined Vukovar, stories and songs that are other reminders of the Homeland War.

On November 17th, together with our teachers, we dressed in blue clothes that symbolized Željka's blue coat, in order to express solidarity with the people who had to leave their homes in Vukovar. The students were introduced to the story of the blue coat, and its borrowed faithful replica sewn by the Kamensko Association that was exhibited in the school hall.

During the morning PYP and MYP students, together with their teachers, lit a candle around the water tower model in the school hall.

We were reminded of how important it is to encourage tolerance, non-violence and respect for each other despite all our differences.
