Earthquake Safety Tips
Dear Students and Parents,
Considering the tragic events caused by the earthquake in Petrinja, Glina and Sisak and being aware of the challenges we have been facing in these extraordinary circumstances it is important to help children cope with recent events and foster their resilience in a time of crisis. We compiled the ‘Parent Guidelines for Helping Children after an Earthquake’ hoping these guidelines might help ease the anxiety of children during an emergency.
Considering the fact that we live in an earthquake prone area discussing disaster preparedness at home as a family is important. We can be better prepared in 3 easy steps:
- Know your hazards - conduct a home hazard hunt to identify hazards in your home like unsecured furniture, fire hazards and other potential issues
- Have a plan - things to consider are how to pick up your child from school in a disaster, where your meeting place is to reunite with family if you cannot return home and who your out-of-area contact person is. Practice drop, cover and hold on!
- Make kits - items to include are water, non-perishable food, light source, first aid kit, comfort items and personal hygiene items.
Please continue conversations at home with your child about disaster safety. You may refer to the enclosed 'Earthquake Safety Tips Presentation'.
To enhance our students’ safety and well-being we are expanding our school’s efforts to prepare for an emergency. After we come back to school we will organise the earthquake evacuation drills to ensure to react appropriately during and after an earthquake.
Have a pleasant and safe weekend!
